What does developmental editing cover?
The big stuff. If it's a huge pain in the butt to correct but is fundamental to your story's success, it's probably a developmental issue. While we may flag issues with spelling or grammar on occasion, this is not a copyediting service.

We'll start by looking at your manuscript's overall structure and organization to ensure your narrative is presented in a compelling manner. If you're writing genre fiction for a specific publisher, we'll make sure your work conforms to their guidelines, and we'll offer suggestions on where it needs tweaking.

You'll get detailed feedback on your characters that identifies any concerns with authenticity, motivation, and development. Is there sufficient reason for your protagonist to embark on a course of action, or is their reaction out of proportion to the problem? We'll flag it and suggest solutions. One-dimensional or redundant characters? Flagged. We'll also look at larger narrative issues like voice and point of view.

Developmental editing encompasses essential storytelling elements like plot and pacing. Characters are at the heart of a story, but without a challenging problem to solve and some juicy conflict along the way, they'll wallow. We'll make sure they stay interesting. When it comes to plot development, there are basic principles but few unbreakable rules. Our goal isn't to rewrite your story in another voice but to help you use your voice, characters, and plot to tell the most dynamic story possible.
